BMI CalculatorWeight Loss / Weight Gain

This is one of the key areas where our approach to nutrition can really help. As you are all aware there are entire libraries full of books dedicated to weight loss with all manner of different diet regimes to choose from. Firstly, lets make it clear to you that there is no secret formula when it comes to weight loss, and that what might suit one person may not suit another. No matter how simple or complicated, glossy or bland, celebrity backed and media praised a diet is, there are no guarantees that it would work for you.

How do diets work?

Put simply, in order to lose weight you must burn more energy than you consume from food and drink. Assuming you do not change your lifestyle and activity do then this requires you to consume less food, hence, “go on a diet”. Most diet regimes work on the premise of reducing the amount of energy consumed by using some form of “hook”, which gets you to think about what you are eating. This usually involves some rules (like no carbohydrate, or no combinations of certain foods), or a grading system (like red, amber and green foods, or the Glycaemic Index), or just simply calorie counting. These diets work because people become conscious of what they are eating and therefore will tend to eat healthier foods. The down side of these diets is that once you break the regime it is all too easy to fall back on the wagon.

The secret to weight loss success is down to the individual, and the role of the nutritionist is to provide guidance, support and advice help the person to help himself or herself. This involves understanding the motivation behind the weight loss, the expectations, and pre-empting the potential pit falls. Often, the changes are subtle and progress is slow and steady, but the results are entirely sustainable.

Our approach is centred on three principles

  1. Accurate nutritional assessment to ascertain current health, motivations and personal goals
  2. nutritional counselling and advice to help the client set, achieve and maintain their goals
  3. Accurate monitoring of physiological aspects of change and insurance of safe and healthy weight loss
